For Physicians
The following article for pediatricians was taken from the Decoding Dyslexia CA website at https://decodingdyslexiaca.org/resources-2/resources-for-pediatricians/
Research shows that risk markers for reading difficulties, including dyslexia, can be identified in children as early as preschool age. With this knowledge in mind, the American Academy of Pediatrics published an article in 2009 (“Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, and Vision”) stating that “pediatricians should… ‘be vigilant in looking for early signs of evolving learning disabilities.’”
Pediatricians are often among the first people to evaluate children and need to be aware of the earliest warning signs of dyslexia.* Therefore, DDCA has created a four-page Risk of Dyslexia Screening Packet for pediatricians and other health professionals to use in their care and evaluation of children.
Risk of Dyslexia Screening Packet
*Currently, there is a reading difficulties screener being developed for pediatrician use by a group of renowned experts. When that screener has been scientifically validated and is ready for official pediatric use, we will update this webpage with that information.
For more information on how pediatricians can play an important role in the early identification of risk of dyslexia, we encourage you to read these two articles published by the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2020:
